
Project Title: Geospatial Accessibility and Financial Protection for Bellwether Surgery in Resource-Limited African Communities

Project Summary:
Bellwether surgical conditions (emergency laparotomy, emergency caesarean section, and open fracture fixation) are vital to saving lives in low- and middle-income countries. However, in many African communities, people face long travel distances and severe financial hardship to access these services.
This multi-centre, prospective study will examine geographic accessibility and financial risk protection for bellwether surgery in resource-limited hospitals across Africa.
Study Design
Multicenter prospective observational study design will be employed
Study Period
The study will be conducted from Aug 30, 2025 to Sep 30, 2025
Study population
All adult patients admitted to surgical ward after bellwether surgery during the study period

- Hospitals or research centres performing bellwether surgeries
- Clinicians, researchers, or public health professionals interested in contributing to data collection and analysis
- Local teams with capacity to obtain ethical clearance and follow standardised study protocols
